Abstract
While the literature is in agreement about the benefits of organizational status in a marketplace, scholars have paid less attention to whether status advantages can be successfully transferred between markets. We hypothesize that the level of trade between the home and host countries and the relative standing of the two countries in terms of global connectedness influence whether high-status VCs help increase the performance of their ventures. We test the hypotheses in a global sample of 462 VC-backed biotechnology startups from 25 different countries founded from 1990 to 2004, and followed through 2006. We find that the level of bilateral trade positively moderates the home-country status-performance link, whereas the relative standing of the countries negatively moderates it. The results suggest that some level of interconnectedness between countries is required for successful transfer of status across countries, and country relative standing acts as a substitute for firm status, reducing its impact on performance.
