Abstract:
We studied the evolution of a top performing European bank during 2000-2011 to understand how organizations maintain strategic fit between the elements of their activity system while growing and changing radically. Though a detailed analysis of public data and private interviews, we identity that “shaping” core-elements is an essential part of the process. Shaping refers to a process that maintains the identity of a core-element and its links to other core-elements and elaborating elements, yet changes the core-element in substantial ways. Our findings contribute to the research by elaborating the previous theory on how organization develop strategic fit over time and by providing a bridging concept between theories of strategy emergence and theories of organizations as designed activity
